Anita Dixon's Corner

The month of May has been a busy month for OFM and I am excited about some of the recent developments OFM has made towards achieving our goal of building a memorial to honor the current generation of Kansas Veterans.

Marine Billy McGonigle

On May 12 I was proud to be part of a ceremony at Veterans Memorial Park for the family of Marine Billy McGonigle who died in Vietnam May 10, 1968. Special thanks to American Legion Post 4 and all the American Legion Riders from throughout the Wichita area for forming a living line of flags for the family to pass through. Tony Clark

clip_image001_thumb7Saturday May 14 was cold and windy but that didn’t stop the friends and supporters of Tony Clark from attending the Operation Freedom Memorial Race-Raffle Fundraiser organized by Tony and donating nearly $1,800 to OFM. Tony’s efforts to date have raised close to $5,000 for the memorial. Tony will be running the Death Valley Badwater 135 mile endurance run July 11-13 this year.

Just recently Tony Clark has arranged for the Wichita Wingnuts baseball team to have a Armed Forces Appreciation Day at Lawrence Dumont Stadium in Wichita on Saturday July 2, 2011 with OFM receiving $1 of every ticket sold. Tony will be running on a treadmill for the duration of the game. Stay tuned for more details.

Nick Williams

Nick Williams like Tony Clark, is another marathon runner who is donating his efforts towards OFM. Nick will compete in Charlotte, NC to run the Thunder Road Marathon Saturday, November 12, 2011. Nick is taking a unique approach to his fundraising by letting people pledge money per mile of his training as they follow him on Facebook. He is currently earning $2.50 per training mile from pledges and Nick has graciously offered to match the first $5,000 donated to OFM in his name.

American Legion Post 256

American Legion Post 256 held a Fallen Soldier Remembrance Dinner & Auction at their post on Sunday May 22. Post 256 generated over $1,900 for OFM that night. Videos of this event can be found on www.ofm-ks.com.

Homeland Roofing

OFM is happy to report the addition of Homeland Roofing as a sponsor to OFM. We look forward to their support and welcome them to our family.

Wichita Chamber of Commerce

OFM has joined the Wichita Chamber of Commerce.

Operation Freedom Memorial Staff, Future Events, Mailing List, Donations

OFM has many professionals who have donated their time and services including memorial design, IT services, architecture and the creation of memorial medallions. There were two areas; business planning and fundraising, where we were woefully short of talent. I am pleased to report that Randy Madden has taken a position (with his employer’s permission) with OFM as Business Manager. Randy has written us a promising business plan and is interviewing prospective professional people to lead us in our fundraising.

We have many events such as Auctions, Golf Tournaments, Celebrity Dinners & Roasts and other events in the planning stages for this year, so stay tuned. You can check our web site and Facebook page and subscribe to our mailing list to keep on top of our development. You can help us raise the money needed to construct the OFM memorial by Memorial Day 2012 by donating, telling your friends and associates about us or by purchasing a granite paving stone for the memorial.

Memorial Veteran Pavers

clip_image002_thumb4The Operation Freedom Memorial has been designed to include over 600 granite paving stones in the central walkway surrounding the Battlefield Cross and Kneeling Soldier. These solid granite pavers are larger than a normal sized paving stone at 6 inches tall by 10 inches wide, 2 inches thick and are cut from gray granite.

Honor any of your relatives or friends, living or deceased, from any state, who have served our country by acquiring a solid granite paver for them to be placed in the Operation Freedom Memorial central walkway. These granite pavers can be engraved with personalized information to honor a veteran for generations to come. Click here for more info.

Memorial Veteran Organization Pavers

In addition to the individual Veteran Pavers OFM is also offering a larger paver that will be set in the sidewalk leading into the memorial. These pavers are available to any legally chartered veterans’ organization such as an American Legion or VFW post. Click here for more info.
